Objectives
The Western Indian Ocean Seagrass Network aims to bring together a wide range of actors involved in seagrass-related activities, whether they are scientists, researchers, students, coastal managers or policymakers. The network, established in November 2017, serves as a platform to identify opportunities for collaboration and improving communication across the region, sharing information about common research interests and ongoing research, conservation and management initiatives, and pooling resources to address knowledge gaps on seagrass ecosystems.
As well as encouraging the monitoring, conservation and management of seagrass meadows in the WIO, and enhancing experience sharing and capacity-building, the network aims to promote harmonization of survey methods (for baseline assessment and monitoring) across the region to foster a comprehensive overview of the distribution and dynamics of these ecosystems, and inform management and policy.
